CRAFSTO’s commitment to sustainable and circular fashion

CRAFSTO is a fashion brand established in 2020. Based on environmentally friendly materials and a genderless approach, the brand seeks to redefine the value of Japan’s manufacturing industry through sustainable practices. All products are designed in-house, and the brand employs a unique, craftsman-based production management system, which has enabled them to achieve a 100% sales rate regularly (a notable contrast to the common issues of excess inventory and waste currently prevalent in the apparel industry.)

A diverse team of members with varied backgrounds contributes their specialized knowledge to tackle each challenge with care. This collaborative approach extends to their innovative system, which tracks which craftsman was responsible for making each product. This information is crucial for handling repairs, allowing CRAFSTO to manage craftsmen’s details alongside customer purchase information. The brand aims to expand this system by including data on shared suppliers, materials, and stock quantities from local partners, creating a more comprehensive and accurate database.

The brand is also proactive in staying updated with the latest developments in environmentally friendly materials, both domestically and internationally. These materials are swiftly incorporated into CRAFSTO’s product planning and development, ensuring that their offerings align with their brand concept.

Beyond product development, CRAFSTO looks at sustainability in other aspects of its operations, too. For instance, the paper bags used in their stores are made from bagasse paper, derived from the residue left after extracting juice from sugarcane. The packaging for deliveries has also been redesigned into reusable tote-style packages. Additionally, CRAFSTO is particular about the materials they source, avoiding any with unclear production or processing methods. They exclusively use by-products from animals raised for meat and pay close attention to the tanning process, favoring vegetable tannin tanning over chrome tanning due to its biodegradability and environmental benefits.

Furthermore, CRAFSTO actively engages in product development that repurposes waste materials generated during the manufacturing process, transforming them into new products. They also actively collaborate with other businesses to implement upcycling projects.
